Central Arizona Shelter Services (CASS), is a non-profit 501 (c)(3), and the largest provider of emergency shelter and housing solutions to adults and families experiencing homelessness in Arizona. CASS seeks to hire a full-time Veteran Support Specialist to empower veterans experiencing homelessness to find permanent housing and support the mission of CASS through community outreach, collaboration, direct services to clients and leading the Veteran Support Staff. Day shift but hours vary. Must be flexible on days.

Essential Functions

Support clients in achieving CASS and VA case plan goals:

  • Collaborate with CASS Veteran Case Managers and VA Social Workers to assess and address client service needs;
  • Build a trusting relationship and gain knowledge of the client’s background and circumstances through frequent and informal conversation;
  • Encourage clients to take ownership of CASS and VA case plans and goals;
  • Assist client in obtaining forms, completing paperwork, contacting referrals, writing correspondence, and keeping appointments;
  • Act as an advocate for the client with the courts, Re-entry & Review Committee, etc.;
  • Promote and support client-peer counseling efforts;
  • Assist in designing and implementing new programs, activities, and process improvements;
  • Mediate conflicts and resolve issues as they arise;
  • Assist in implementing process for discharge upgrades, as appropriate.

Provide administrative support:

  • Conduct client engagements and assessments at Outreach Shelter;
  • Assist in shelter check-in process, coordinating bed assignments, and monitoring compliance with shelter rules;
  • Mentor and direct client volunteers and programs;
  • Enter relevant information in HMIS system, department logs, and emails on a timely basis;
  • Compile data and produce reports for analysis, billing, program monitoring and compliance;
  • Coordinate with VA, various agencies, and internal departments on appointment notifications and assistance for preparing and getting to and from appointments;
  • Routinely coordinate with VA Social Workers, VA Regional Office, Police Department, mental health providers, employment specialists, and state departments on client cases;
  • Transporting clients to and from VA Hospital and VA Regional Office.

Assist clients in moving forward with their progress after leaving the agency:

  • Assist clients in the move to new housing, securing furniture and other household items as available;
  • Provide support for 90 days following agency departure, maintaining regular contact.

Other Duties:

  • Assist in community street outreach and engagement efforts;
  • Serve as back-up for Case Management and Shelter staff;
  • Perform other duties as required.

Skills / Requirements

  1. High school diploma or equivalent;
  2. Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Word, Excel and Outlook calendaring, highly accurate data entry skills;
  3. Current knowledge of best practices for working with people experiencing mental illness, chronic homelessness and/or chemical dependency;
  4. Possess a valid Arizona Driver license, proof of insurance and satisfactory 39-month driving record;
  5. Ability to obtain State of Arizona Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card.


  1. Bachelor’s degree in social work, social or behavioral science;
  2. Veteran with Honorable Discharge;
  3. Experience working with the homeless or impoverished;
  4. Bilingual in English and Spanish.
