Job Description:

The Global Security Initiative is seeking a Financial Specialist. Under the supervision of the Finance Manager, you will conduct financial functions for a pan-university initiative. These functions include but are not limited to maintaining, monitoring, and tracking post-award research expenditures, assist with managing accounts, ensuring internal controls and processes are adhered to, advising researchers and staff on ASU financial policies, and other duties as assigned. Your position will directly impacts the University goal of increasing research expenditures through the effective management of accounts.

Essential Duties:

Support post-award sponsored activity. Post-award activities include regular review, reconciliation, and projection of award finances, preparing adjustments and corrections to award budgets, preparing financial reports, and at the end of the award, ensuring all financial requirements have been met, and closing out the award. Interact regularly with and provides high quality customer service to faculty members conducting sponsored research.

Ensure timely and accurate post-award accounting of grants and contracts; review reconciliation of accounts for compliance of charges in accordance with sponsoring agency/contract conditions and requirements. Manage awarded projects in accordance with University and sponsor regulations. Prepare standard and nonstandard accounting reports for the ASU research investigators. Maintain all applicable project records and files. Decide proper handling of financial transactions. Approve transactions within designated limits

Monitor a variety of account expenditures, maintain and reconcile payroll and detailed budgets for various accounts, advise and/or determine which expenditures are within the budget guidelines; inform management of irregularities and proceeds with corrective action. Process travel reimbursements, purchase of supplies, services, and equipment with use of P Card and other purchasing documents in accordance with established procurement and financial policies. Track effort of research scientists and faculty to ensure they match sponsor expectations.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND one (1) year of related experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications:

Demonstrated knowledge of applicable federal, state and regulatory requirements, laws and standards.

Demonstrated knowledge of quality customer service standards, methods and practices.

Demonstrated knowledge of basic financial practices, regulations and standards.

Experience in planning, analyzing and establishing priorities.

Experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

Evidence of effective communication, both verbal and written.

Experience in working effectively in an environment subject to quickly changing priorities, sensitive information and short deadlines.

Experience in developing and maintaining cooperative working relationships both within and across organizational areas.

Experience in leading by example in communicating, participating and encouraging support of the institution's sustainability programs.

Experience in working effectively and collaboratively with faculty and staff.

Working Environment:

Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, standing, walking. Visual acuity and manual dexterity associated with daily use of desktop computer; bending, stooping, reaching and lifting up to 20 pounds. Ability to clearly communicate verbally in English, read, write, see and hear to perform essential duties. Regular review of completed tasks.
