DEPARTMENT: Processing Laboratory, NAT
SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY
Under immediate supervision of Shift Supervisor or other manager, this position processes samples received in accordance with regulations and enter requisition and donor information into the computer.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following; other duties may be assigned. Management retains the discretion to add to or change the duties of the position at any time.
· Quarantine units as required and follows all safety regulations concerning the handling of biohazard materials to include cleaning work area, centrifuges, and master trays.
· Process sample tubes by centrifuging and placing in master trays in correct order and enter tubes into LB-Trays in the computer.
· Process outside testing samples by recording (on outside testing sheet) applying GC bar codes and enter in the computer with correct client code.
· Perform computer searches, matches, verifications, and printouts as assigned and identifies possible tube errors through use of computer assisted programs.
· Initiate troubleshooting of equipment and resolution of problems and reports outcome to Supervisor.
· Record refrigerator and freezer temperatures and discard old samples and store test tubes in the refrigerator.
· Pick up samples from client and respond to client concerns in a timely and courteous manner.
· Assist with weekly, monthly and quarterly quality control of non-testing equipment, such as accessioning equipment and refrigerators, in Processing and Consultation and Reference labs as well as at cross-match facilities.
· Complete at least 12 hours continuing education per year.
Must not pose a direct threat or significant risk of substantial harm to the safety or health of himself/herself or others. Must comply with all applicable safety rules and policies and be willing to report actual and potential safety violations to the appropriate supervisor or manager.
Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such level as is determined in The Blood Center’s sole discretion.
Full time: must be regularly available to work at least 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week, or such other days or hours per week as The Blood Center determines are necessary to meet business needs.
Overtime (applicable only to non-exempt positions)
Must be available and willing to work such overtime per day or per week as The Blood Center determines is necessary or desirable to meet business needs.
Weekend and Holidays
Must be available and willing to work such weekends and holidays as The Blood Center determines are necessary or desirable to meet its business needs.
Must occasionally able to work at off site locations and be able to transport self to same.
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma; No previous experience or training required.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Valid Texas Driver’s License and acceptable driving record
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Must be able to exercise sufficient judgment to determine when to involve supervisor or manager for variances or problems.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to blood and/or blood components, as well as any other biohazard materials. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and risk of radiation. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Job duties involve an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood with a risk of exposure to Hepatitis and HIV.
