Summary: The registered nurse utilizes all aspects of the Nursing Process in the perioperative setting. Polices/procedures as well as the Nurse Practice Act and AORN standards govern their practices, while keeping patient satisfaction in mind. The nurse can perform as a circulating nurse or scrub nurse. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

Job Requirements:

  • Utilizes the Nursing process in providing age specific care within the perioperative setting. Documents on the perioperative record in accordance with policy
    • Practices intra-operative standards of care relevant to operating room services in the circulator role and scrub role as trained.
    • Assures that aseptic technique is used and maintained as set by AORN standards. Monitors the room for breaks in technique.
    • Communicates procedure progress/problems to the coordinator, manager, or other appropriate individuals.
    • Maintains patient and staff safety by recognizing potential for injury by chemical irritants, electrical injury, positioning aspects, and other areas that could pose potential injury.
    • Intervenes as necessary to ensure patient safety.
  • Asseses the physiological status of the patient using age specific criteria.
    • Prepares the operating room to make sure the room temperature is appropriate.
    • Makes sure extra blankets are available.
    • Maintains a quiet environment especially during induction and during emergence from anesthesia. Calms the patient by keeping the environment as quiet as possible.
    • Reviews the needs of the surgeon for the specific operation before patient enters the operating room to ensure the case goes smooth and efficiently.Anticipates needs of the team and surgeon.
    • Reports patient status and surgical progress to family and friends throughout the procedure as needed.
    • Stays at the patient's side prior to induction and during emergence from anesthesia to give re-assurance and to assure safety. Ensures a quiet environment is achieved during induction and during emergence.

  • Identifies nursing activities necessary for expected outcomes including: use of equipment, supplies and positioning aides.
  • Positions the patient with assistance. Ensures that the patient is comfortable and free from the potential of injury.
  • Coordinates all equipment and supplies needed to afford optimal procedure outcome. Checks equipment prior to case to ensure proper functioning. Utilizes supplies in a cost conscious manner.
  • Immediately removes from service any equipment that needs repaired. Notifies the appropriate staff to get equipment repaired. Biomed is notified of needed repairs as necessary.
  • Demonstrates awarness of individual patient rights.
  • Always functions as a patient advocate.
  • Respects patients’ religious beliefs.
  • Ensures patient privacy is maintained while positioning.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Follows all departmental safety, infection control, count policies, and other policies as written.
  • Coordinates counting of items indicated by policy.(instruments, sponges, sharps, etc.)
  • Documents on the operative record the results of the counts. Reports any discrepancy to appropriate people. Takes action if counts are not correct.
  • Disposes of contaminated materials according to infection control policy.
  • Follows surgical prep policy and ensures solutions are not pooling and/or prep is dry prior to draping. Documents as such on the intraoperative record.
  • Follows universal protocol and documents accurately.
  • Follows count policy and takes x-ray if count is incorrect.
  • Uses and understands principles of aseptic and sterile practice in a variety of situations. Maintains and monitors sterile field for breaks in technique.
  • Practices aseptic technique as set forth by AORN standards.
  • Directs non-licensed clinical staff performance and practice. Initiates action to correct any deficiencies. Discusses any corrective action with the individual in private and in a respectful, professional manner.
  • Participates in delivery of care and in evaluating care delivered by non-professional staff.
  • Is always prepared for emergency situations.
  • Resolves case specific issues in a manner that provides continuance of safe patient care.
  • Attends and participates in fire safety initiatives, in-services and drills.
  • Knows where shutoff valves are located.
  • Knows where fire extinguishers are located and knows how to use them.
  • Knows different codes.
  • Knows where to find the malignant hyperthermia cart and how to assist the anesthesia department if the need arises.
  • Knows where the emergency carts and defibrillators are located and how to use.
  • Knows the process for adding cases during hours when scheduling is not present.
  • Knows how to check privileges online if questions arise.
  • Checks with manager or director on call for privilege questions when scheduling a stat or emergent case for off shifts, holidays, and weekends.
  • Uses budgeted resources judiciously, keeping in mind to reduce waste and contain cost.
  • Obtaines authorization for overtime. Fills out the appropriate form when working overtime.
  • Opens supplies as needed for case, holds items identifed as holds until needed.
  • Actively participates and advocates the reprocessing initative.
  • Stock room and fills out appropriate paperwork.
  • Correctly completes patient charges.
  • Confirms correct implants with the surgeon prior to opening.
  • ssumes responsibility for professional growth and maintenance of competency within area of practice. Practices a "team" approach.
  • Does not abuse benefit or sick time.
  • Seeks guidance when needed.
  • Maintains education record, keeps up to date on a monthly basis.
  • Accepts added responsibility as assigned; works overtime as needed.
  • Returns from breaks and lunches in a timely manner.
  • Clocks in and out on a daily basis and when on call.
  • Attends in-services and records attendance, reads minutes if unable to attend.
  • Provides a welcoming and supportive atmosphere to new employees and students. Assists new staff with their learning in a supportive manner. Does not critize in public or in a hurtful manner. Uses constructive feedback.
  • Orients new staff as assigned in a positive and supportive nature.
  • Maintains current license and CPR as required by SRHS.
  • Picks cases as needed.
  • Assists in room turnover as needed
  • Understands and is proficient with regard to computer charting.
