Job Description


  • Provide “on call” services to nursing staff per schedule determined by Administrator.
  • While “on call” be available via telephone at all times and be able to report to facility within thirty (30) minutes if necessary.
  • Be knowledgeable regarding state/federal regulations and facility policies and procedures.
  • Maintain departmental compliance with state/federal regulations and facility policies and procedures.
  • Develop and implement nursing policies and procedures.
  • Participate in the quality management program and attend all meetings.
  • Formulate and implement improvement plans based off of review of facility Quality Indicators.
  • Recruitment, retention, and training of licensed nursing staff.
  • Provide an orientation period to all new licensed nursing staff and ensure competency prior to releasing them from orientation period.
  • Provide twelve (12) hours of educational in-service to department annually.
  • Provide each licensed nursing staff member with a performance evaluation ninety (90) days after hire and annually.
  • Identify areas of poor performance in licensed nursing staff and provide education and disciplinary action as necessary.
  • Develop monthly staffing schedules for licensed nursing staff to ensure that sufficient nursing personnel are on the premises to meet the needs of a resident for nursing services, that an R.N. is scheduled for at least eight(8) hours of each twenty-four (24) hour period, and that at least one nurse is present on premises and responsible for directing care to not more than sixty-four (64) residents.
  • Review employee time clock information for exceptions and unapproved overtime.
  • Initiate and document thorough investigations on all allegations of abuse.
  • Report all reportable incidents to required agencies within required time frame.
  • Participate in annual inspections of facility by the Department of Health Services.
  • Work with Administrator to develop a plan of correction for any deficiencies noted during survey.
  • Educate department staff and implement changes per the plan of correction.
  • Work the floor, providing direct care to residents, when other coverage cannot be provided.
  • Operate department within budget.
  • Notify Administrator if efficient care cannot be provided to residents within current budget.
  • Absorb job responsibilities of Administrator in his/her absence.


Knowledge of:

  • Medical terminology.
  • Safety rules, policies and procedures, infection prevention and control procedures.
  • Facility emergency/disaster response and evacuation procedures.
  • Resident Rights and identifying abuse and/or neglect.

Skill in:

  • Use and care of equipment, tools and materials used in resident care activities.
  • Working independently to complete daily activities according to work schedule.
  • Following and maintaining safety standards.
  • Following and effectively communicating verbal and written instructions.
  • Operating a computer utilizing a variety of commonly used and specialized software applications.

Ability to:

  • Work more than eight (8) hours per day and/or forty (40) hours per week when required.
  • Work under high stress for extended period of times.
  • Maintain high workload while meeting required deadlines.
  • Identify when a situation cannot be handled and know when to ask for help.
  • Be sensitive to resident’s families and respond in a professional manner.
  • Adjust communication style based off of audience such as physician’s, associate personnel, licensed nursing staff, nursing assistants, residents, and visitors.
  • Know your scope of practice and always operate within it.
  • Assume charge of personnel and clients assigned to your area.
  • Adhere to the Arizona State Board of Nursing Rules and Nurse Practice Act.
  • Use diagnostic equipment.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with associate personnel, residents and resident family members.
  • Read and write clearly.
  • Understand and follow, quickly and accurately, oral and written instructions.
  • Maintain confidentiality and work under pressure in a dynamic environment with changing demands and priorities.
  • Comply with facility policies and procedures.

Regular contacts with associate personnel, residents, resident family members and visitors.


  • Must be able to bear weight and lift 100 pounds or more.
  • Requires constant physical activities including standing, walking, lifting, bending, stooping, pulling, stretching, turning, grasping and reaching.
  • Visual acuity to determine the accuracy, thoroughness and quality of work assigned.
  • Aural acuity to receive detailed information through oral communication, often from persons with speech impairment.
  • Safety-sensitive position pursuant to A.R.S. 23-493.


  • Must be a graduate of a state approved school of nursing.
  • Must have a current Arizona Nursing License or a current license from a compact license state.
  • Must hold a current Arizona State Board nursing license and must maintain license renewal in accordance with the standards of the State Board of Nursing.


  • Attend mandatory nursing meetings and continuing education classes that are designated mandatory.
  • Obtain/maintain Arizona Department of Public Safety Fingerprint Card at employee’s expense.
  • Obtain/maintain CPR Certification.
  • Complete annual Tuberculosis Testing.
  • Complete required 12 hours of annual in-service training.
