The Department of Geography & Environmental Studies at the University of New Mexico invites applications for a probationary appointment leading to a tenure decision at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will contribute to research, teaching and academic life in the department and will have expertise in Geographic Information Science (GISscience).
Candidates should be capable of teaching courses across our spatial methods curriculum, and of supporting Master’s and PhD students in a variety of projects that range from spatial analysis and modeling to spatial statistics and geovisualization, all while maintaining an active research agenda in GISscience. Salary is competitive. Applicants who are appointed to a UNM continuing faculty position are required to provide an official certification of successful completion of all degree requirements prior to their initial appointment with UNM.
The successful candidate will contribute to the department’s goals and areas of excellence, joining a geography department that is passionate about teaching and research in both Environmental Studies and GIScience. We provide innovative curricular programs that are relevant to current, real-world problems, and that are strongly coupled with our individual research expertise. We also enjoy a variety of collaborative partnerships with other units and scholars across campus. As part of a new interdisciplinary science initiative at UNM that will bring together world class research teams generating large datasets (e.g., VGI, mobile devices, geosocial networking, vehicle movements, remote sensing) with teams analyzing large datasets, the new center for the Advancement of Spatial Informatics Research and Education (ASPIRE) will open within the new state-of-the-art "PAIS" facility in fall of 2020. ASPIRE will provide GIScience faculty, including the individual that fills this position, with state of the art computing facilities (including dedicated server infrastructure and fiber optic connectivity), a unique 70m+ pixel visualization facility, pre- and post award support staff, and myriad opportunities for collaboration within ASPIRE and the larger Interdisciplinary Science program.

Minimum qualifications: this position requires a Ph.D.in Geography or related field and specialization in GIScience in hand by date of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications: strong applications will demonstrate (1) the potential to teach both undergraduate and graduate level GIScience courses, (2) the capacity to advise and direct graduate students, (3) the potential to develop an active research agenda in GIScience that may include, but is not limited to, a specialization in big data science and analytics, spatial-temporal data mining, spatial analysis/modeling, and geovisualization of big data, (4) a demonstrated interest in GIScience program development, and (5) commitment to diversity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.
