The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center Pediatrics Department encompasses a network of hospitals, clinics and community-based services that are integrally linked through education and research to apply advanced medical science to the patients they serve. The Pediatric Hematology/Oncology group is one of two COG affiliated pediatric practices in the state of New Mexico and offers the only federally funded Hemophilia Treatment Center in the state. We offer an opportunity to work in a range of clinical, academic, research, and/or community settings.

The Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology is seeking one full-time Specialty Nurse to work primarily with both pediatric and adult hemophilia/thrombosis patients within the Ted R. Montoya Program. This person will be responsible for planning, and implementing nursing care for patients with bleeding and coagulation disorders, both inpatient and outpatient. Organizing patient treatment plans, clinic visits, triaging phone calls from families/patients and physicians both within UNM and from outside UNM. Coordinate inpatient surgical interventions with the surgical team, inpatient staff, arrange for follow-ups following discharge, and work closely with home care companies to provide home treatment as needed. Work with the Clinical Researchers on clinical trials for patient care. Ability to read roadmaps and protocols. Educate patients and families on their cancers/disorder and provide instruction on proper treatment and care.

Conditions of Employment
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • CPR Certified.
  • May be required to submit to annual TB and rubella screening.
  • UNM will provide Hepatitis vaccination, candidate may decline vaccination through declination form or may provide record of vaccination from previous employer.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Nursing or a related clinical field; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.Certification/LicensureState of New Mexico Licensed Registered Nurse or licensure pending as documented by temporary licensure OR current RN licensure from a state participating in the multistate privilege to practice compact with New Mexico.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Pediatric nursing experience
  • More than 1 year of recent experience in nursing
  • Nursing skills that include drawing blood, starting IVs (preferably in a pediatric setting), knowledge of medications and indications, nursing assessment, and triage skills
  • Spanish speaking
