A Visiting Assistant Professor of Architectural History and Theory

The UNM Department of Architecture seeks applicants for one Visiting Assistant Professor of Architectural History and Theory. Applications received on or before June 10, 2019 will have best consideration. The positions will remain open until filled. The appointment commences August 12, 2019 and ends May 16, 2020. This is a non-tenure track temporary faculty appointment which may be renewed for one or two years additional terms up to a maximum of three years.

In the Fall of 2019, the candidate that is selected will be teaching the World Architecture I course and an architectural history / theory elective seminar. In the spring semester, they will teach the undergraduate Architectural Theory class, and a second history / theory elective seminar of their choice.

We seek applicants that have a demonstrated capacity for critical inquiry into architectural history and theory issues as they apply to changing global conditions regarding culture, climate, society and technology. We seek applicants that either have an emerging record of excellence in teaching and / or in a developed research agenda.

UNM is New Mexico’s flagship research institution, and the largest university in the state. The Department of Architecture offers a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture, with three concentrations: Pre-Professional Architecture; Design Studies and Landscape Architecture. We also offer a professionally accredited Master of Architecture degree, as well as a non-professional Master of Science in Architecture degree with two research-oriented concentrations: Computational Ecologies, and Public Health & the Built Environment.

Other degree programs in the School include the Master of Community & Regional Planning, the Master of Landscape Architecture and the Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Planning & Design. The two graduate certificate programs are Historic Preservation and Regionalism, as well as Urban Innovation.

The Department of Architecture has a strong reputation for providing a quality education, focusing on relevant 21st century issues. The US Department of Education’s College Scorecard ranks UNM Architecture #3 for affordability in the U.S. among universities that have architecture bachelors and / or masters degree programs. It is currently ranked #22 in the U.S. by the StartClass ranking.

The Department of Architecture is housed in the award-winning George Pearl Hall, designed by architect Antoine Predock, a former UNM student and adjunct professor. Currently, Antoine Predock’s title is Professor in Practice. In addition to the spacious, naturally-lit design studio spaces, the building has the latest design and fabrication tools, including various methods of digital fabrication and other modes of making.

Albuquerque, the largest city in New Mexico, is located along the Rio Grande adjacent to the Sandia Mountains. A high desert city, the climate is mild most of the year. One can participate in a full range of outdoor activities year round.

Minimum Qualifications: 1) Graduate degree that involves the development of expertise in Architectural History and Theory. 2) Minimum of one year of part-time or full-time teaching or equivalent in an architecture, art history or architectural history program. This teaching can be during the candidate’s graduate or PhD education. However, the candidate must have been the instructor of record.

Preferred Qualifications: 1) Preference will be given to applicants with a PhD in Architecture History or Theory, or in a similar PhD program that is focused on Architectural History and Theory. PhD Candidates in "all but dissertation" status will also be considered. 2) Emerging qualifications that demonstrate excellence in achievements in their scholarly and/or professional realms. 3) A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.
