Job Description

The Fairfield Family YMCA is looking for Lifeguards and Swim Instructors.  Lifeguards and Swim Instructors are responsible for maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas by creating a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Must have current Lifeguard or Swim Instructor Certification.  

This is a part time positions. Hours available from 5am -2pm and evening hours. 

Responsibilities will include:


  1. Maintains constant surveillance of the pool area.
  2. Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required.
  3. Maintains effective relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
  4. Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
  5. Be rescue ready at all times when on deck and during scheduled work hours.
  6. Ensure scheduled shift is covered at all times.
  7. Conduct and monitor all swim tests prior to participants engaging in pool activities.
  8. Perform equipment checks and ensure appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  9. Check the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
  10. Provide emergency care and treatment as necessary and until medical professionals arrive.
  11. Perform chemical testing at appropriate times of the day, as required, and takes appropriate action.
  12. Attend all staff meetings, trainings and other YMCA functions as required 

Swim Instructors

  1. Ensure a safe swimming environment for all participants.
  2. Prepare for and teach all assigned classes. The use of lesson plans, session plans and evaluation sheets may be necessary.
  3. Ensure scheduled shift is covered at all times.
  4. Test and evaluate students at east twice during the swim session. With supervisor assistance, issue progress reports to all students. 
  5. Must be suited, on deck and ready to perform all duties during assigned shift.
  6. Follow and enforce safety standards, policies and procedures.
  7. Attend all staff meetings, trainings and other YMCA functions as required by Supervisor.
  8. Maintain open lines of communication with participant, coaches, referee, staff and supervisor.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.

Skill / Requirements

    1. Must be at least 16 years of age, over 18 years of age preferred.
    2. Must have Current certification for Lifeguard training (recognized by the State of California), First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED and 02 required and must be maintained and kept in current status.YMCA Lifeguard Certification is preferred.
    3. Must have a current certification for Swim instructor /Water Safety Instructor (Red Cross) or Fundamentals of Teaching YMCA Swim Lessons preferred. 
    4. Must be able to successfully pass swimming test.
    5. Public relations skills and/or experience working with a diverse population desired.
    6. One or more years of experience teaching swimming lessons in an aquatics facility.
    7. Criminal Fingerprint clearance, Health Screening w/ Negative TB and Negative Drug test screening. 
    8. Complete online new employee orientation and child abuse prevention training. 

    Working Conditions:

    Environmental Factors: Indoor and outdoor facilities (e.g. childcare and recreational sites); exposure to heat, cold, potentially hazardous chemicals, toxic materials; work on slippery or uneven surfaces. Noise level is usually moderate.
